Encompass/Engineering is a web 2.0 application that addresses the needs of design, test, quality, supply chain and related disciplines looking to optimize component and IP re-use, remove costs from their design chain and improve the efficiency of their engineering cycles. By overlaying and integrating multiple existing source data systems, Encompass/Engineering presents the user with a comprehensive view of all relevant information about a component, sub-assembly or complete product so that better decisions can be made on component/IP selection and re-use, BOM optimization, and impact analysis.
Encompass/Engineering also completes the engineer’s investigation and re-use path by enabling components and IP to be placed directly in the engineers specific design tool, eliminating the need to navigate multiple systems. Encompass/Engineering provides connectivity to common engineering and business systems such as Design Systems (MCAD/ECAD/SW), PLM (Agile, Dassault, PTC), ERP/MRP and Document control, as well custom and legacy systems.
Encompass/Engineering allows companies to characterize both internal and external engineering assets in a structured way, using that structure as the framework to enable access to all related data within the organization, regardless of type or host system. The resulting solution provides directly-relevant application use cases for each user group, such as design, supply chain, test and support. Each domain personality captures the terminology, use cases, data model and critical relationships for that domain such that the characterization and use of the structured and unstructured content is directly relevant to the users.
Encompass/Engineering is architected to address the needs of various engineering centric organizational roles and disciplines. The use of familiar browser based web technologies, standard design/authoring tool and database integrations, industry-supported enterprise integration modules, and commonly-used engineering and enterprise systems ensure that Encompass/Engineering is quickly adopted within any organization.
Built on the core Encompass platform, Encompass/Engineering does not replicate data within the organization. Rather, it connects with and incorporates data from both structured and unstructured sources to build a knowledge catalog of relevant, consistent information. In addition, individual users contribute to the knowledge base through interactive editing of the knowledge catalog. The net result is that each user has instant access to the thinking and experience of everyone else in the organization, subject to permission settings. Encompass is used to addressing common questions within an engineering organization, such as:
- Can I find and evaluate components, parts, or IP quickly?
- Where used, who used? What was their experience?
- Can I map open issues to a component or block of IP?
- Can we quickly assess a potential acquisition’s IP catalog?
- Can we quote a new configuration variant quickly?
